Hancock Regional Hospital scored a 99.8 percent compliance rate this month from surveyors with the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). The compliance survey is performed at hospitals every three years.

Hospital officials discussed the news Wednesday night at a board meeting.

“I think we have a lot to be proud of here,” Sherry Gehring, the hospital’s vice president of nursing and quality services, said to the board.

HFAP is one of just two voluntary accreditation organizations authorized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to visit hospitals nationwide to review their compliance with Medicare or Medicaid requirements.

“Sixty percent of our people are Medicare patients, so it would be brutal if we didn’t pass,” said Rob Matt, vice president of business development and marketing for Hancock Regional. “They (the surveyors) come in unannounced. You know they’re coming in that year sometime, but you don’t know when.”

HFAP’s survey lasted 2 ½ days and involved both document review and department visits. Surveyors found that Hancock Regional complied with nearly all of about 1,500 standards.

“It was obvious meeting with them that they were impressed from the get-go,” said Dianne Osborne, chairwoman of the hospital board.
